Description | Vacuum Pump Systems in Transformer Installation and Maintenance

When a new transformer is installed or an existing one is opened for maintenance, its internal insulation system—comprising cellulose paper (Kraft paper) and insulating oil—is exposed to atmospheric air. This air contains moisture and gases that are detrimental to the transformer's health.

The Problem of Moisture and Gases:

  • Moisture is the archenemy of cellulose insulation. It drastically reduces the dielectric strength of the paper, increasing the risk of internal electrical failures. It also accelerates the aging of the cellulose, leading to a shorter transformer life.
  • Dissolved Gases, primarily oxygen, can lead to the formation of corrosive by-products (e.g., organic acids) and promote oil oxidation, degrading the oil's insulating properties.

PureTech high-performance vacuum pump system is used to evacuate the air from the transformer tank. This process serves two vital functions:

  • Removal of Moisture: By creating a deep vacuum, the boiling point of water is significantly lowered. At a pressure of 1 Torr (approximately 1 mmHg), water boils at near room temperature. This causes the moisture trapped within the solid insulation to vaporize and be efficiently removed by the pump—a process known as "vacuum drying."
  • Removal of Dissolved Gases: The vacuum encourages the release of dissolved gases from both the oil and the solid insulation, effectively "degassing" the system and restoring the dielectric integrity of the insulation.

A thorough and rapid vacuum drying process is critical for project timelines and transformer health. PureTech vacuum pumps are engineered to achieve and maintain the required deep vacuum levels (typically below 1 Torr) quickly and consistently, ensuring the insulation system is perfectly prepared for the next step.

The secondary application of vacuum pump systems in transformer installation and maintenance, that is Vacuum Oil Filling:

Following successful vacuum drying, the transformer must be filled with clean, dry, and degassed insulating oil. Simply pouring oil in would re-introduce air. The solution is Vacuum Oil Filling.
In this process, the vacuum pump system continues to run, maintaining the vacuum inside the transformer tank. The insulating oil, which has itself been processed through a filter press or a vacuum dehydrator, is then introduced into the tank from the bottom. Because the tank is under vacuum, the oil is drawn in smoothly without turbulence, effectively preventing the re-absorption of air and moisture. This ensures the transformer is filled with pristine oil, preserving the integrity achieved during the drying phase.

PureTech's vacuum pump systems are designed to be seamlessly integrated with oil purification systems, providing a complete, closed-loop solution for transformer processing.
