Nowdays, the transformer oils are widely applied to various oil-filled equipment as the media of cooling, insulating, and the dielectric properties of protecting the active part. Transformer oil is highly refined oil that consist mainly a mixture of hydrocarbons. Therefore, with long-term running, oxidation by-products and decaying products start to form in the transformer oil, which will further result in the increases of acidity (neutralization number), as well as the decreases of interfacial tension of insulating oil. The law of change is that it increases with the oxidation of oil, and after a certain depth of oxidation, it may sometimes undergo polymerization and condensation reactions under certain conditions because of the generated acid, water, ketone, aldehyde, alcohol, etc. At this time, Resin, asphaltene, etc. not only does the acid value not increase, but it will decrease. The resinous and asphaltenes produced at the same time can increase the oil's hygroscopicity, that is, the oil's ability to dissolve water increases. If the moisture resistance is not good, it will directly cause the moisture to increase faster than the new oil.
At this stage, the sludge forms in the transformer oil will cause the insulating oil losing its dielectric strength, we call it used oil or old oil. If keep running the old oil without regenerating, the further deterioration of transformer oil will cause the damage to the active part of power transformers or other electrical equipment.
